General Notes: "I, John Adam Bauer, of the County of Gasconade, State of Missouri, in consideration of twenty-three dollars to me, in hand, paid by my son, Michael Bauer, the receipt where of is hereby acknowledged, do by these presences fully acquit and release him, the said Michael Bauer, of a certain obligation entered into by him in an indenture by him exacted on the seventh day of 1845 binding him to keep, cloth, and maintain me as a member of his family during my natural life, or at my option to furnish in lieu thereof two hundred weight of hog meat, fifty weight of lard, twelve pounds of butter, twelve bushels of wheat, twenty-five bushels of potatoes, ten bushels of corn, $4 worth of sugar and coffee, twenty-five cents worth of salt, and $8 worth of shoes and clothing as soon as I have left the United States for Europe." (Signed) John Adam Bauer, April 30, 1846. There was no further documentation or mention of him after the date of the above agreement.

Peter Bauer traveled to Budapest where he was involved in building another bridge, but died soon after/during the construction. His wife (still in her twenties), traveled back to Belgium and remarried.
Peter married Fransiska Louisa de Greydt in 1869.

53. Michael Bauer (Johann Adam 5, Johann Adam 4, Johannes 3, Johann Martin 2, Lorenz 1) was born on 1 November 1820 in Alsace, France, died on 5 August 1875 in Krakow, Franklin County, Missouri at age 54, and was buried in St. Gertrude Catholic Cemetery in Krakow, Franklin County, Missouri.
General Notes: MICHAEL BAUER'S MILITARY HISTORY
When the Home Guard Units in Gasconade County were incorporated into the 4th Infantry, Missouri Volunteers, Michael Bauer succeeded Captain Manwaring who had resigned to become Provost Marshal. Captain Manwaring was later killed by a party of rebels when he attempted to arrest one of them while on a visit to his family in the spring of 1864. These rebels were pursued with one rebel being killed. The other rebels did manage to escape but left behind their horses, which were sold by the government for $600. Michael Bauer left the above unit shortly after the incorporation and joined the "Gasconade County Battalion Reserve Corps" which was formed from the German settlers in Gasconade County.
He was given a commission as a 1st Lieutenant on January 7, 1862 and was assigned to Company "C" under the command of Captain B. Mundwiller. When the Gasconade County Battalion Reserve Corps was also incorporated into the "4th Infantry Missouri Volunteers" on January 18, 1862, Michael Bauer was promoted to the rank of Captain and given command of Company "B". He remained in this capacity until the Unit was mustered out in the spring of 1863.
On June 24, 1863, Michael Bauer was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the "54th Missouri Enrolled Militia" and assigned to Company "I" under the command of Captain Peter King. The other officers were: 1st Lt. Henry Lohmeyer and 2nd Lt. Henry Pulmann. In late October or early November of 1864, Captain King was killed by rebel guerrillas.
On November 5, 1864, Michael Bauer was given a commission as Captain and assumed command of Company "I". He held this position until March 12, 1865 when his commission was rescinded and the "54th Missouri Enrolled Militia was mustered out.
On May 25, 1865, Michael Bauer was given a commission as a Captain in the "8th Regiment, Missouri Militia". He was placed in command of Company "A". Serving with him were: 1st Lt. Henry Lohmeyer and Henry Schmidt, both of whom were commissioned on May 25, 1865.
In addition to his military service, he was also a Justice of the Peace in Boeuff Township, being appointed in the year 1855. While residing in Boeuff Creek area, he served as Public Administrator (1865-1869) and as the Recorder (1869-August 5, 1875). Prior to his death, he was also a Trustee for Union Township during the year 1875. In the Census of 1870, Michael Bauer was residing in the Lyon Township and had property valued at $7,821.
Bauer property was south of Detmold and just east of Boeuff Creek.
Michael married Maria Anna Fritz, daughter of Joseph Fritz and Anna Marie Wagner, on 21 April 1844 in Franklin County, Missouri. Maria Anna was born on 23 January 1828 in Alsace, France, died on 11 November 1874 in Krakow, Franklin County, Missouri at age 46, and was buried in St. Gertrude Catholic Cemetery in Krakow, Franklin County, Missouri.

They impoverished and were forced in all kinds of labor.

General Notes: Herman came to the United States with his parents and his brother Theodor Peirick and his sisters Lisa Peirick and Louise Peirick in the year 1844, who then settled near St. Joseph's Catholic Parish, Neier, Missouri. He was a private in Company C, 26th Missouri Infantry during the Civil War. The Civil War unit was Holman's Battalion Sharp shooter volunteers. Mustered in on November 26, 1861 and mustered out on December 17, 1864. In 1870 was working as a store clerk per the 1870 Census. The family was living in the Lyon Township at the time of the 1880 census. Sometime in 1886 the family moved from near Port Hudson, Missouri to a farm at Shawnetown Ford on the Bourbeuse River near Moselle, Missouri. They lived there until their deaths.

He was preceded in death by his wife on April 14, 1968. He was also preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Hugh, Frank, Bill, Gus, and Dewey Kloppenberg, and one sister, Agnes Michelle.
Surviving are three nephews, Sherwood Kloppenberg of Union, MO; Earl of Virginia Beach, VA; and Elwood Kloppenberg of Pembroke Pines, FL. one niece, Dorothy Daniels of Leslie, Missouri; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other relatives and many friends.
Mr. Kloppenberg had served his country in the Army during World War I. He had been a businessman in St. Clair for many years, having had a garage, implement and auto dealership. He was dearly loved by family and friends, and will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 19, 1982 at the Russell Colonial Chapel. Rev. Donald Stoll officiating. Interment was in the Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union, MO.

A kind and loving wife and sister, she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday April 16 at Casey-Lenox Chapel, Rev. Robert Walters officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Kloppenberg had been a heart patient for some time, but had felt exceptionally well last week and remarked to her husband at the breakfast table on Easter Sunday that it was a delightful day for a short trip. She collapsed at the table and died instantly.

Fern was a longtime member of the St. Clare Catholic Church. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, St. Clair Circle 1082. She was also a member of the St. Clair V.F.W. Post 2482, Ladies Auxiliary.
During her working years, Fern had been employed at the Deb Shoe Company in St. Clair and later had worked in the restaurant industry in St. Clair. She was a past member of the St. Clair Senior Citizens Center and had lived at Greater St. Clair Homes for 21 years.

He is survived by his wife, Celeste Klenke, Union; four sisters, Wilma Huvendick, Union, Leola Schackman, St. Louis, Anita Straatmann, Labadie, and Marcella "Sally" Bolzenius, Beaufort; nieces, nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 14, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, with a Mass following at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Peter Blake officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

She was employed at Brown Shoe Factory in Union for 40 years and later worked at Hazel Manufacturing for seven years before retiring in 1997.
Miss Peirick was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church, Villa Ridge, and had been a church organist for 40 years.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Madeline Crowe; three brothers-in-law, Bob Eckelkamp, Bill Crowe and Dick Klenke; and one nephew, Glennon Eckelkamp.
Miss Peirick is survived by one brother, Frank Peirick and wife Gerry; three sisters, Dorothy Eckelkamp, Virginia Peirick and Celeste Klenke, all of Union; 14 nieces and nephews; great-nieces and -nephews; other relatives and many friends.
A funeral Mass was held Wednesday, Nov. 24, at St. Mary's Church, Villa Ridge, with the Rev. Mark Bozada officiating.
Interment was in the church cemetery.
Memorials to the St. Mary's Building Fund, Catholic Charities, St. Vincent de Paul Society or Masses are preferred.

General Notes: Ella Otten, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Otten of Moselle, MO, was born in that little town on July 1, 1920 and passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Washington, MO Friday February 9 at 5:00 a.m., having reached the age of 13 years, 7 months and 8 days. She was a student in St. Mary's Catholic school at Moselle and was to have graduated from the eighth grade this spring. About two weeks before her death, she became ill and was taken to the hospital where she underwent an operation. However, it did not prove of benefit to her and although everything in medical aid was used, Our Heavenly Father called her to her Eternal Home. Since the Sunday previous to her death, the child was resigned to the Will of God and said she knew she was not going to get well and told members of the family she was not afraid to die. That her little soul may rest in peace, was the prayer offered in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at churches in this vicinity last Sunday. Funeral services were held by Father Meler of St. Mary's church in Moselle Monday morning at 9:00 o'clock, with interment in the church cemetery.
Besides her parents, she is survived by four brothers, Fred, Edward, Henry and William; three sisters, Martha and Julia Otten and Mrs. Gertrude Maupin; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 22, 1992 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Fr. Robert Heimos officiated. Interment was in St. Francis Borgia Cemetery. The Narup family was served by Nieburg-Vitt Funeral Home, Washington.

Mrs. Brune resided in Dallas, Texas, for several years, returning to Washington about seven years ago.
He was of the Catholic faith, and a member of the National Association of Registered Architects.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Henry Edward Brune; and by two sisters, Lucille Julius and Rosemary Fogle.
Among his survivors are one brother, John G. Brune, Labadie; five sisters, Doris Kluesner and husband Virgil, Washington; Caroline Narup, Celeste Peters and Clarita Fallis, all of Washington, and Margaret Pohl and husband Robert, St. Charles; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Puetz is survived by one son, Marvin Peirick and wife Lynne, Jefferson City; one sister, Regina Woody, St. Charles; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Immaculate Conception Church, Union. The Rev. Matthew Mitas officiated.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was born on Nov. 14, 1951, in Franklin County, Missouri, the son of the late George J. and Rose L. Brandel Peirick. He was united in marriage on October 29, 2005, in Jefferson City, to Marian Lynne Haake who also died in the accident.
Marvin was employed as a Tech I in the Central Services division of the Missouri Secretary of State office since April 15, 1985. He was a 1971 graduate of Pacific, Mo., High School, and attended East Central College. He was a U.S. Army veteran who was deployed in Germany during Operation Desert Storm with the National Guard. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church.
He assisted in many political campaigns for candidates of both parties. Marvin avidly followed the fortunes of his favorite sports teams including Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and the Missouri Tigers.
Survivors include his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Mary Haake, Jefferson City; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carl R. and Terri Haake, Jefferson City; brother-in-law by marriage, Robert Kahn, Ft. Two Jefferson City residents were killed and another injured in a two-car accident at 11:22 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 54 at Buffalo Road, in Cole County. According to the Highway Patrol, a 2003 Pontiac, driven northbound by Marvin J. Peirick, 57, pulled into the path of a 2000 Dodge Dakota, driven eastbound by Calvin J. Speckhals, 51. Peirick and a passenger, Marian L. Peirick, 54, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Lynne was active with the Girl Scouts when she was younger, and in her adult years enjoyed art, horses, and collecting clowns. She was also an avid follower of her husbandÂ's favorite sports teams.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Longtown, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of both American Legion Post No. 133 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4282 in Perryville.
Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Monday, April 21st and 6:30-8:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 22nd at the Young and Sons Funeral Home in Perryville. A funeral for 87-year-old Frank F. General Notes: Laura Antoinette Frueh, 79, Beaufort, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at St. Clair Nursing Center. She was born July 16, 1922, at Union, the daughter of the late Felix Peirick and wife Charlotte, nee Schnaath.
She received her education at Oak Grove School. On August 24, 1940, she was united in marriage to Arthur Frueh at Union. Mrs. Frueh worked at Brown Shoe for 25 years as a shoe cutter.
She was a member of the St. Joseph Church, Neier, and a member of the quilters club at the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, on June 23, 1991; four brothers, Herman, Edward, Louis and Alfred Peirick; and one sister, Marie Krawitz.
Mrs. Frueh is survived by four sons, Frank Frueh and wife Dorothy, Washington, Henry Frueh, Beaufort, Leonard Frueh and wife Joyce, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Edward Frueh, Beaufort; five daughters, Norma Supinski and husband Ronald, St. Clair, Mary Miller and husband Ron, Higginsville, Virginia Ballowe and husband Kevin, Villa Ridge, Patricia Gildehaus and husband Francis, Lee's Summit, and Roberta Foley and husband Doug, St. Peters; two sisters, Frances Buchholz and husband Alfred, Washington, and Edna Owens, Beaufort; one brother, Frank Peirick and wife Irene, Perryville; 27 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 5, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, with Mass at St. Joseph Church, Neier, with Rev. Kevin Schmittgens officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. She is survived by one son, Francis Overschmidt and wife Dianne, Union; three daughters, Leona Collins, St. Clair, Jerrine Lindemann and husband Joe, Union, and Linda Rohrer and husband Jay, Pacific; two sisters-in-law, Alberta Kindel, St. Clair, and Marie Bunch and husband Gene, St. Peters; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.

General Notes: Sylvester Bernard Kindel, 75, known to most as "Ike", St. Clair died in Washington on Thursday, September 14, 2000. Ike was born in St. Mary's, Missouri on December 23, 1924, son of Joseph Henry Kindel and Rosa Veronica Kindel, nee Peirick. On June 2, 1951, he married Alberta Unnerstall and they had three children.
Ike is survived by his wife Alberta Kindel, St. Clair; one son, Craig Kindel and wife Amy, St. Clair; one daughter, Debbie Wells and husband Gary, St. Clair; four grandchildren, Dawn Womack, Kirkwood, Wendy Wells and Ryan Wells and Erica Kindel all of St. Clair; two sisters, Agnes Kindel and Viola Overschmidt, both of St. Clair; brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, Ike was preceded in death by one son, Keith Raymond Kindel and three brothers, Victor Kindel, Raymond Kindel and infant brother, Frank Kindel. Ike was of the Catholic faith and was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church in St. Clair.
He served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 4657 and a member of Disabled American Veterans. During his working years, Ike was employed as an insurance agent by American General Insurance, having retired in 1982 after 23 years of service. Visitation was held after 2 p.m. Friday, September 15, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair with rosary services at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 16 at St. Clare Catholic Church in St. Clair with Father Paul Telken officiating. As a young man, he began his working career at St. Clair International Shoe Company in St. Clair, working there as a shoe cutter for 21 years. He was later employed as a carpenter for Swan Construction Company, retiring in 1975.
Bill was an outdoorsman at heart and was happiest when he was active outside. He liked to cut wood and go hunting and fishing, especially when the boys were with him. He was an outgoing, fun-loving man and always had a tale to tell. Dancing was another of his favorite pastimes and in recent years, he enjoyed riding his four-wheeler. He was an avid baseball fan and even after his sight failed him and he couldn't watch the games, he listened to them with enthusiasm.

General Notes: She played the saxophone and piano. She did very well at school. Irene spent most of her life working at Bourbeuse Shoe and then Brown Shoe Co. She sewed the upper parts of ladies shoes. Irene was Secretary of the Shoe Workers Union.

She was born July 1, 1915, at Union, the daughter of Martin Hobelmann and his wife Hallie, nee Doerr. Mrs. Dunakin received her education in Union at Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Union High School in 1933. In 1937 she was united in marriage to Sterling Giesing at Immaculate Conception Church, Union. He preceded her in death in January 1972. In June of 1977, she was united in marriage to George Dunakin. He preceded her in death in January 2002. Mrs. Dunakin had been employed at Brown Shoe Company as a stitcher and retired in 1980 after working there over 40 years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Daughters of Isabella, the Western Catholic Union and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Hobelmann; her sister-in-law, Louise Hobelmann; one daughter-in-law, Janice Giesing; and one son-in-law, Kim Hill. Mrs. Dunakin is survived by two sons, Martin Giesing and Richard Giesing, both of Union; one daughter, Mary Hill, Le High Acres, Florida.; one stepdaughter, Brenda Smith, Portland, Ore.; one stepson, George Dunakin, Springfield; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six step grand children; other relatives and many friends. A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, March 25, at Immaculate Conception Church, Union, with the Rev. Matthew Mitas officiating. Interment was in the Immaculate Conception Church cemetery. Memorials to the County Seat Senior Center Building Fund or Masses are preferred. The Dunakin family was served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, MO.

Sterling Edward was born on 18 April 1910 in Chamois, Missouri, died on 20 January 1972 in Union, Franklin County, Missouri at age 61, and was buried on 22 January 1972 in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Union, Franklin County, Missouri. The cause of his death was from a heart attack at 5:20 a.m.
General Notes: He attended the Catholic school at Chamois, Missouri. Sterling and his brothers used to jump on to the train to get to school. He wanted to be a professional ball player, but he was hit by a car when he was young and broke his arm, which didn't heal right.
When Sterling was young he worked on the Missouri River building dikes. Later he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was in a camp on which is now CCC Camp road in the north part of Union, Missouri. The men planted trees in Franklin County. At this time he met Irene Hobelmann.
After his marriage he worked at various jobs. He worked on a farm, shoe factory, and during World War 2 he worked at the ammunition plant in St. Louis, Missouri and as a guard on Lock & Dam #25 on the Mississippi River near Winfield & Foley, Missouri. He was working as a shoe leather cutter at Wolff Shoe Co. in Union, Missouri at the time of his death.
Sterling belonged to the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. His pastime hobbies were playing his violin and guitar. Also he kept track of the high and low temperature of each day for years, a habit picked up from his days working on the River.

General Notes: George R. Dunakin, 83, Union, died Friday, January 11, 2002, at Grandview Healthcare Center, Washington. He was born March 15, 1918, at Sharon, Massachusetts, the son of Pearley A. Dunakin and wife Bertha, nee Capper. Mr. Dunakin received his education in Sharon and graduated from high school there in 1935. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from May 1942 to December 1945. In 1945 he was united in marriage to Dessie Naramore at Nashville, Tennessee, where he was stationed. They made their home in Sharon, Massachusetts. Mr. Dunakin then moved to Salem with International Shoe Company in 1952. He later moved to Union. On June 11, 1977, he was united in marriage to Irene Hobelmann Giesing. He retired from International Shoe in 1980 after 28 years of service. Mr. Dunakin was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Union, and a member of the American Legion Post 297.
He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1975; two brothers, William Dunakin and Harold Dunakin; and one sister, Hazel Morse. Mr. Dunakin is survived by his wife, Irene, Union; three sons, George Dunakin Jr. and wife Vicki, Springfield, Martin Giesing and Richard Giesing, both of Union; two daughters, Brenda Smith, nee Dunakin, Honolulu, Hawaii, Mary Hill, nee Giesing, Lehigh Acres, Florida; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Monday, January 14, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, followed by a funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Union, with Rev. Matthew Mitas officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. VanLeer was a member of the St. Clair Temple Association and had served as secretary for 36 years. She was employed as a repairer for Carmo Shoe and Deb Shoe Companies.
Mrs. VanLeer was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Anton Hobelmann, George Hobelmann and Eugene Hobelmann; and three sisters, Mable Gay, Frances Herndon and Mary VanLeer. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth VanLeer and wife Betty, Glendale, Ariz., and Robert VanLeer Jr. and wife Janet, St. Clair; one daughter, Phyllis Wideman and husband Bob, St. Clair; one sister, Leona Brown, St. Clair; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
