Gerard fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge in Missouri in March 7 and 8, 1862. Resaca Georgia battles were between May 8, 1864 and May 16, 1864.
GERARD RICHARD REYMER AND THE CIVIL WAR
Gerard Reymer was assigned to the XV Corp, Union Army in 1864 under the command of Brigadier Charles Woods and Brigadier General Giles Smith. Their superiors were General McPherson and General Sherman.
Woods and Giles Smith brigades had some 2500 tough veterans from Missouri, Ohio, Illinois and Iowa. These men under orders, wade across Camp Creek with rifles and cartridge boxes held over their heads intent on capturing the Confederate held hill beyond the creek. And this they did one day ahead of schedule, May 14, 1864. Once across the creek, they re-form their ranks and then start up the hill under a storm of lead and iron. They neither slow nor stop and in a few minutes they swarm over a row of piled-up logs. Ahead about four hundred yards distance lies the main and last fortification, the red dirt ramparts zigzaging along a low ridge and anchored by redoubts-mounting cannon.
Confederate General Polk orders his men to retake the hill from the Union Army. Polk's army make three separate assaults supported by fierce artillery bombardment that seems to envelope the whole hill on fire.
But Woods & Giles Smith brave men aided by Captain Louis Voelkers 6-gun "German Battery" beat each of them back. After the third assault and the resistance by the Union troops, General Polk retreats back to the main Confederate line.
The hill near Resaca, Georgia now belongs to General Sherman's men and this was the only success of the day. A Missouri soldier later comment's "It was all the same to us whether we died here or some other place."
We will never know exactly when Gerard was wounded, but this was probably when it happened as he died on May 24, 1864 of a leg wound. Over 100,000 Union and 60,000 Confederate soldiers took part in this Battle at Resaca near Atlanta, Georgia. The Union Army had about 600 killed and 2147 wounded. The Confederates had about 300 killed, 1500 wounded and 1000 missing. Resaca, Georgia is 18 miles southeast of Dalton, Georgia.

General Notes: In 1973 Ida Constance Boss (married to Lyman R. Van Buskirk), typed the following, titled "My Papa"
I was Boss until I married and then I wasn't Boss anymore.
My father was Theodore Boss. How many of you ladies called your father Papa. I did. I was grown and away from home before I called him Dad or Father. Papa had shortened his name from Theodore to Theo. and he couldn't say Theo, he said T O so he received lots of mail addressed to T.O. Boss. He was born in Bluffton, Mo, Feb. 17, 1862. Theodore's father was born that piece of land between France and Germany that was always being fought over. He came to America with the family when he was in his teens, and taught school in Osage Co., Mo. His name was John Herman Boss.
In one of Pap's writings he wrote, "I moved with my parents to Chamois, Mo. Osage, Co., and stayed with my parents until of age and then worked for Gerd Giesing six months for $18.00 a Month. In August 1888 I and my brother William went to Howell Co., Mo. and I bought me a claim of 160 acres. That fall we went back home to get my belongings and moved to Howell, Co. I batched in a log cabin 9 months and then went back to Osage Co. and married Wilhelmina Christina Gloe, August 13, 1889 in the Catholic Church in Morrison, Mo.
Pap had bought a new wagon and a team of horses to make the trip and traveling in a covered wagon and camping along the way, it took them 7 days to make the trip. He had a team of oxen named Buck and Jerry. He later bought additional land totaling 360 acres.
Eight children were born and raised there. The home was enlarged as the family increased, finishing the upstairs and screening in the big L shaped back porch.
My Papa believed in keeping everyone busy and a good education. He was a trustee of the Catholic Church of the White Church for many years and a director of the Dowling Public School also for many years. He could make the best hickory whistles, tops mand of spools and corn stalk fiddles. Every year he took the family to the fourth of July picnic, the Peace Valley Picnic and the White Church picnic. He would take up fishing in the Lost Camp Water Hole with worms, that we had to spit on before the perch and the bullheads would bite. We each had our own bobber and line.
We had a croquet ground that was scraped free of all grass and holes. We all became good players, and it was the meeting place for my groups of people, young and old. Pitching horse shoes and ball too were played. We liked deep snow to come overnight so that Papa could hitch old Molly to the hollowed log and we all sat in it for a ride to the school, to the delight of all the children in school. Its purpose was to make a path for us to walk to and from school.
Papa stayed on the farm with Mamma until he was 80 years old, doing his farm work alone as much as he could, and Mama had a hired girl. Then the farm was sold and they moved to Pomona, Mo. where they lived until death. Papa age 91 years and 10 month never fully recovered from a broken hip. Mother continued to live there with a daughter Alma until age 96. Mama liked music and in her last years the neighbor boys came to play guitars and sing to her.

LORENZ JOHN MERTENS.
One of the foremost industries of Osage county is the Chamois Milling Company at Chamois, of which Lorenz J. Mertens is general manager and secretary. Mr. Mertens is yet a young man, his birth having occurred near Loose Creek, Osage county, November 19, 1880. His parents. John and Agnes (Messen) Mertens, were old settlers of this state who originally came from Germany. The father is still engaged in farming near Loose Creek, but the mother has passed away. In their family were twelve children, of whom the following now reside in Chamois: Lorenz John, of this review; Frank; Peter; and Martha, a vocalist of, more than local reputation.
Lorenz J. Mertens spent his youth upon his father's farm, attending the public schools of the neighborhood. When twenty-one years of age he took a course in Beasley's Academy at Columbia, where he studied business and commercial science. In 1902 he settled in Luystown, where he clerked for a time in his uncle's store, working there for six months. At the end of that time he accepted a position as bookkeeper and general manager for the Morrison Milling Company, with which firm he was connected for one year. He then married and was engaged in business in Morrison until 1905. He also owned an establishment at Chamois, which latter he operated until 1911. In that year he sold out and organized the Chamois Milling Company, which was incorporated for twenty-five thousand dollars fully paid up. Mr. Mertens was made general manager and secretary and built a large mill in Chamois, which has a capacity of one hundred and fifty barrels per day and the business has grown from month to month ever since the company was organized. Much of its success is due to the ability of Mr. Mertens, who is still general manager and secretary. He also organized the Peoples Bank of Chamois, of which he is a director, and he is a stockholder in the Bank of Chamois. He is also interested in the International Insurance Company and holds stock in the Continental Portland Cement Company of St. Louis. Mr. Mertens is a democrat, thoroughly in accord with his party but not an office seeker. He is an adherent of the Catholic church and fraternally belongs to the Catholic Knights of America and the Modern Woodmen of America, of which latter he is head consul. At a comparatively early age he has attained to an important position in the industrial world of his native county and great credit is due him for what he has accomplished.
