Esther W. Reinkemeyer, age 88, of Linn, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2012, at her residence. Esther was born March 10, 1923, in Linn, a daughter to the late Anton and Mary (Rehagen) Rustemeyer. As a child, Esther attended the Lone Star School near Linn. On October 12, 1946, Esther was united in marriage to Lawrence "Bud" H. Reinkemeyer at St. George Catholic Church in Linn. He preceded her in death on May 21, 1964. Esther worked a number of years at Goff Super Markets which later became Thriftway Supermarket. Esther was a member of St. George Catholic Church, St. Ann's Sodality and the Osage County Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, counted cross stitch and loved the outdoors. Esther is survived by: three sons, Larry Reinkemeyer of Linn, Gary and his wife Carla Sue Reinkemeyer of Linn, and Dale and his wife Mary Kay Reinkemeyer of Bonnots Mill; one daughter, Elaine Reinkemeyer of Springfield, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Amy, Kelly, Michael, Kristina, Erica, Jenna and Alex Reinkemeyer; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Esther was preceded in death by: two brothers, Joseph and Leo Rustemeyer; and two sisters, Elsie Neier and Rosemary Rustemeyer. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 5, 2012, at Morton Chapel in Linn. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2012, at St. George Catholic Church in Linn with Fr. I.C. Medina as the celebrant. 96. Lorenz John Mertens (Johann (John) Francis Hubert-5, Peter Lorenz-4, Henrich Joseph (Henry)-3, Stephen-2, Wilhelm-1) was born on 19 November 1880 in Loose Creek, Osage County, Missouri. He died on 17 May 1920 in Chamois, Missouri. He was buried in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery in Chamois, Missouri. He was hit and killed by a train while walking back home on the railroad tracks from seeing about his farm crop east of town. He attended the public school in Loose Creek and spent his youth on his father's farm.

When 21 years old, he took a course in business and commercial science at Beasleys Academy at Columbia, Mo. In 1902 he settled in Luystown, Mo., where he clerked for six months in his uncle's store. At the end of this period he accepted a position as bookkeeper and general manager for the Morrison Milling Company where he remained for a year.

In 1905 after two years of having been engaged in business at Morrison, Lorenz came to Chamois and went into partnership with his brother Frank in the saloon business. Later he bought out his brother and continued in business until 1911. His wife had a restaurant adjoining the saloon on the west side of Main at Pacific. In that year he sold out and organized with others the Chamois Milling Company of which he was made general manager and secretary and built a large mill at Chamois. A Catholic, Lorenz belonged to the Modern Woodmen of America, of which he later was Head Council. Residence: year 1915 Crawford Township, Linn, Osage County, Missouri.

LORENZ JOHN MERTENS.

One of the foremost industries of Osage county is the Chamois Milling Company at Chamois, of which Lorenz J. Mertens is general manager and secretary. Mr. Mertens is yet a young man, his birth having occurred near Loose Creek, Osage county, November 19, 1880. His parents. John and Agnes (Messen) Mertens, were old settlers of this state who originally came from Germany. The father is still engaged in farming near Loose Creek, but the mother has passed away. In their family were twelve children, of whom the following now reside in Chamois: Lorenz John, of this review; Frank; Peter; and Martha, a vocalist of, more than local reputation.

Lorenz J. Mertens spent his youth upon his father's farm, attending the public schools of the neighborhood. When twenty-one years of age he took a course in Beasley's Academy at Columbia, where he studied business and commercial science. In 1902 he settled in Luystown, where he clerked for a time in his uncle's store, working there for six months. At the end of that time he accepted a position as bookkeeper and general manager for the Morrison Milling Company, with which firm he was connected for one year. He then married and was engaged in business in Morrison until 1905. He also owned an establishment at Chamois, which latter he operated until 1911. In that year he sold out and organized the Chamois Milling Company, which was incorporated for twenty-five thousand dollars fully paid up. Mr. Mertens was made general manager and secretary and built a large mill in Chamois, which has a capacity of one hundred and fifty barrels per day and the business has grown from month to month ever since the company was organized. Much of its success is due to the ability of Mr. Mertens, who is still general manager and secretary. He also organized the Peoples Bank of Chamois, of which he is a director, and he is a stockholder in the Bank of Chamois. He is also interested in the International Insurance Company and holds stock in the Continental Portland Cement Company of St. Louis. He owns a handsome residence in Chamois besides business property and a's0 holds title to oil lands in Texas.

In 1903 Mr. Mertens married Miss Anna D. Giesing, a native of Missouri and a daughter of Gerard and Rosa (Reymer) Giesing, the former a farmer of Osage county. In their family were eight children. Mr. and Mrs. Mertens are the parents of three children, Josephine, Gerard and Leona, all of whom are attending school.

Mr. Mertens is a democrat, thoroughly in accord with his party but not an office seeker. He is an adherent of the Catholic church and fraternally belongs to the Catholic Knights of America and the Modern Woodmen of America, of which latter he is head consul. At a comparatively early age he has attained to an important position in the industrial world of his native county and great credit is due him for what he has accomplished. His success is not only individual but is also a part of the development which has made Osage county the prosperous region that it is today.

Lorenz John Mertens and Anna Theodora Giesing were married on 21 April 1903 in Chamois, Osage County, Missouri by Arsenius Fahle, Catholic Priest. Anna Theodora Giesing (daughter of Gerhard (Gerard) Giesing and Rosa Anna Reymer) was born on 8 May 1881 in Chamois, Missouri. She died Stroke on 19 February 1951 in Chamois, Missouri. She was buried in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery in Chamois, Missouri. She was born May 8, 1881 at 10 minutes after 12 o'clock a.m. in Chamois, Mo. Built block building at the corner of Main and Pacific, which he used as a pool hall and soft drink parlor. In 1927 he built the brick building adjoining the north side of the present post office, where he had a pool hall and lunch counter. He owned and operated a large soft drink parlor in 1912 in Chamois, Osage County, Missouri.

Peter Hubert Mertens and Emma Minnie Giesing were married on 20 October 1908 in Chamois, Missouri. Emma Minnie Giesing (daughter of Gerhard (Gerard) Giesing and Rosa Anna Reymer) was born on 12 February 1886 in Chamois, Missouri. She was baptized on 14 March 1886 in Assumption (St. Mary's) Church in Morrison, Gasconade County, Missouri. She died from stomach cancer on 4 December 1953 in St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri. She was buried in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery in Chamois, Missouri. She was born February 12, 1886 at 11 o'clock p.m. in Osage County. She made her First Communion on May 8, 1898 at Chamois, Mo. She died on 20 July 1973 in Frankenstein, Osage County, Missouri. She was buried in Our Lady of Help Catholic Cemetery in Frankenstein, Osage County, Missouri. Mrs. Nellie Kremer, 88, Frankenstein, died Friday morning (July 20, 1973) at her home there. She was born November 2, 1884, at Frankenstein, the daughter of Martin Haslag and Johanna Mertens Haslag. She was married to J. Gus Kremer September 9, 1903, at Frankenstein. He died November 12, 1963. She was a life long member of Our Lady of Help Catholic Church, Frankenstein, and a member of the St. Ann Sodality.

Survivors include one son, Martin Kremer, Frankenstein; and nine daughters, Mrs. Fred Backes, Mrs. Frank Thoenen, Mrs. Henry Thoenen, Mrs. John Broker, Mrs. Frank Troesser, Mrs. Joseph Backes, all of Frankenstein; Mrs. Tony Brandt, Linn; and Mrs. Wm. J. Roettgen, Jefferson City.

Two sisters, Mrs. Martin Gentges, Loose Creek; and Mrs. Ida Dudenhoeffer, Frankenstein; 43 grandchildren and 79 great grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at Our Lady of Help Church, Frankenstein with Rev. Joseph Lorenz officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of Morton's funeral Home, Linn."

Maria Petronella Haslag and J. (Gus) Kremer were married on 9 September 1903 in Frankenstein, Osage County, Missouri. J. (Gus) Kremer died on 12 November 1963. He was buried in Our Lady of Help Catholic Cemetery in Frankenstein, Osage County, Missouri.

125. Theresa Laura Mertens (Wilhelm (William) Carl H.-5, Peter Lorenz-4, Henrich Joseph (Henry)-3, Stephen-2, Wilhelm-1) was born on 18 January 1889 in Frankenstein, Osage County, Missouri. She died on 13 July 1966 in St. Francis Hospital in Washington, Franklin County, Missouri. She was buried in Our Lady of Help Catholic Cemetery in Frankenstein, Osage County, Missouri. Theresa Laura Mertens Lock, was born at Frankenstein on January 18, 1889, the daughter of William (Wilhelm Carl H.) Mertens and his wife Maria Christine Jaegers Mertens, and died at a hospital in Washington, Mo. early Wednesday morning, July 13, 1966, at the age of 77 yrs., 5 months and 25 days.

She grew up in the Frankenstein and Luystown communities and on Aug. 22, 56 years ago she was united in marriage to Mr. Leo Lock who survives her. She is also survived by 2 daughters, they are: Renilda, Mrs. Fred Backes of New haven; and Mrs. Jack Christoffel of Pharr, Texas. There is one brother, Walter Mertens, and a sister, Mrs. Bruce Steisemeyer both of Linn. These together with 5 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren are the immediate surviving relatives.

Mrs. Lock resided in the Frankenstein community until 3 years ago when she and Mr. Lock moved to New Haven to live with their daughter and family.

The rosary was prayed at the Morton Chapel in Linn. The requiem Funeral Mass was conducted at Our Lady of Help Church in Frankenstein Saturday morning with Rev. Jos. Lorenz officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery at Frankenstein.

Pallbearers who served were Adolph Koenigsfeld, Edgar Lock, Joe Schaefer , Henry Starke, Ray Laughlin and Werner Kever.

Theresa Laura Mertens and Leo Lock were married. Leo Lock was born on 2 June 1890 in Luystown, Osage County, Missouri. He died on 10 May 1972 in Franklin County, Missouri. He was buried in Our Lady of Help Catholic Cemetery in Frankenstein, Osage County, Missouri.

126. Emilie Mertens (Wilhelm (William) Carl H.-5, Peter Lorenz-4, Henrich Joseph (Henry)-3, Stephen-2, Wilhelm-1) was born on 7 February 1893 in area near Bonnots Mills, Missouri. She died on 28 May 1974 in Woodcrest Nursing Home in Linn, Missouri. She was buried in St. George Catholic Cemetery in Linn, Osage County, Missouri. Mrs. Emilie Stiesmeyer, 81, of Linn, died Tuesday evening at the Woodcrest Nursing Home. She was born February 7, 1893 near Bonnots Mill, the daughter of William and Christine Jaegers Mertens. She was married in February 1911, at Frankenstein to Bruce Stiesmeyer, who survives at the Woodcrest Nursing Home. Mrs. Stiesmeyer was a member of the St. George Catholic Church in Linn.

Other survivors include: four sons, Dr. E. H. Stiesmeyer, Sunnyvale, Calif.; Walter Stiesmeyer, Jefferson City; Irvin Stiesmeyer, Arnold and William Stiesmeyer, Jefferson City; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Belle Koenigsseld (ie. Koenigsfeld), Bonnots Mill and Mrs. James Chipps, Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Walter Mertens, Linn; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be prayed Thursday at the Morton Funeral Chapel in Linn. Funeral services will be Friday at the St. George Catholic church, Linn with the Rev. Ed Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Emilie Mertens and Anton Bruce Stiesmeyer were married in February 1911 in Our Lady of Help Catholic Church in Frankenstein, Osage County, Missouri. Anton Bruce Stiesmeyer (son of Anton Wilhelm Stiesmeyer and Mary C. Benson) was born on 18 October 1884 in Luystown, Osage County, Missouri. He died on 26 September 1974 in Charles E. Still Hospital. He died on 9 June 2011 in Westphalia, Osage County, Missouri. He was buried on 13 June 2011 in Annunciation Catholic Cemetery in California, Missouri. Clement T. (C.T. or Bud) Mertens, 93, of California, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Westphalia Hills Care Center in Westphalia. Clement was born December 20, 1917, near St. Thomas, the youngest of eight children of Theodore and Mary Mertens. He grew up on the family farm and received his education in a one-room school in the area. His dad died during the Depression and after they lost the family farm, he moved with his family to Tipton in 1934 to be closer to his oldest brother, Carl. He began his career as a trucker and operated a limestone pulverizer for the Moniteau County Agricultural Improvement Association. He hauled lime for the Association from 1938 (with breaks during and after World War II) until 1964. Clement served in the Army Air Corps from May 1942 until December 1945, achieving the rank of T/Sgt. He was extremely proud of his service in the Air Corps, where he learned that his talent was recognized, and he gained confidence in his leadership, organization and management abilities.

After his service, he met and married Ida Mae Stockman on November 9, 1946, in Wardsville. They built a house near Wardsville and moved to Columbia in 1950 to take advantage of an opportunity with Whitely Tire Co. In 1953, they moved to California, and he and Ida purchased their first farm three miles south of McGirk in 1954. Over the next 20 years, they expanded their farm to 400 acres and developed a leading dairy operation of 60 milking cows. In the early years, Clement continued to haul lime, and also did custom hay baling, silage chopping and combining.

Self-educated by diligent reading and obtaining information from the university, Bud adopted new ideas and technology quickly. He was one of the first in the area to grow alfalfa for his dairy herd, terrace the land to prevent erosion, use computerized record-keeping, record the milk production of individual cows, feed cows according to production, convert to free-stalls for the dairy cows, and design and build an elevated milking parlor. In 1971, Bud and Ida were honored for their dairy farming accomplishments by the Missouri Farm Management Recognition Program. After moving to town in 1978, they continued their involvement with dairying by working for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association to officially measure milk production of cows for dairy farmers in Moniteau and Cole counties.

In 2003, he and Ida moved to a retirement center in Westphalia, the village to which his Mertens ancestors immigrated in the 1830s. With the support of his wife and family, Clement actively participated in community activities while operating a dairy farm 24/7. He was vice-chairman and founding member of Public Water Supply District #2 that brought water to the rural areas east of California, member of the Rural Fire Department, chairman of the Jefferson City Dairy Council, district chairman of Mid-America Dairyman, Inc., board member and state delegate to the MFA Cooperative Association, chairman of the Extension Council, and member of the FmHA County Loan Review Board, American Dairy Association, Holstein Association USA, and Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders' Association.

During their retirement they traveled to see family and friends, and visited nearly every state. Bud was an avid reader of newspapers, magazines and thousands of books. He enjoyed learning by reading throughout his life. He was known by family and friends for his numerous informative and interesting letters. In his 60s, Bud began using computers and in his 70s wrote a 430 page book about his family and life called "My Story." In his book, he wrote about the philosophy of life he was given as a child: "No matter what task you do, always do your best . . ." It was a philosophy that Bud lived and passed on as his legacy. Bud was an active member of Annunciation Catholic Church. He was Parish Council member for seven years and also served as lector, usher, and communion minister. He was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a charter member of the Annunciation Church Council of the Knights.

Clement is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Ida. He is also survived by his children: David of Belleville, Wis., Theodore (Ted) of Brodhead, Wis., Karen (Mertens) Gerke of Otterville, and Beverly (Mertens) Riley of Madison; and by six grandchildren, two step- grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011, from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church in California. There will be a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. at the church, with Mass of Christian Burial directly following the Rosary. Burial with full military honors will be in Annunciation Catholic Cemetery. Officiating will be Fr. Ed Schmidt. Donations can be made in Clement's name to Hospice Compassus or to the American Red Cross for the people of Joplin, c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, 100 S. A 1967 graduate of Fatima High School, Mr. Mertens was a lifelong farmer in the Wardsville area and maintained the family farm which has been in the family for three generations. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Wardsville.

Survivors include one brother and two sisters-in-law, Tom L. and Della Mertens, San Diego, Calif.; and Joyce K. Mertens, Jefferson City; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Sue Mertens, St. Louis, Mo., Joyce A. and Jim Cregger, Jefferson City, and Christy M. and Randy Muenks, Bonnots Mill, Mo.; four nieces, Darla Holthaus, Waterloo, Iowa, Sarah Muenks, Jefferson City, Rachel Muenks, Kirksville, Mo., and Rebecca Muenks, Columbia, Mo.; and three nephews, Jon Cregger and Joe Cregger, both of Jefferson City, and Adam Muenks, Bonnots Mill, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert J. Mertens and Joseph P. Mertens. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2006, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Wardsville, with the Rev. Gregory C. Meystrik officiating. 172. Gerard John (Gerald) Mertens (Lorenz John-6, Johann (John) Francis Hubert-5, Peter Lorenz-4, Henrich Joseph (Henry)-3, Stephen-2, Wilhelm-1) was born on 12 November 1906 in Chamois, Missouri. He died on 2 August 1947 in Augusta, St. Charles County, Missouri. He was buried in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery in Chamois, Missouri. He died when the brakes on the truck he was driving for Klondike Silica Quarry failed, the truck crashing down a steep embankment.

Some of Gerard's first jobs were with the local International Shoe Factory and with the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In November 1932 he and Mary took over the O. K. Restaurant and with the end of prohibition on April 7, 1933, he started selling beer. They operated this business, which was in the building on Pacific Street, to April 1942. After the restaurant business was sold, Gerard had various jobs. For two seasons he worked as a deckhand on a Corps of Engineers reconnaissance survey boat, after which he went to Washington, Mo., to work for the Corps for several years. His next job was at the Klondike Silica Quarry near Augusta, Mo., where he drove a truck hauling spoils to an embankment.

He was a member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Church in Chamois and of St. Francis Borgia Church in Washington and a member of the SEISEL Council No. 1121 E. of C. and Washington Lodge No. 1559 B.P.O.E. 1

Gerard John (Gerald) Mertens and Mary E. Davis were married on 29 January 1929 in Chamois, Missouri. Mary E. Davis (daughter of Barney Davis and Harriet Jones) was born on 5 October 1907 in Mokane, Callaway County, Missouri. She died on 9 October 1995 in Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri. She was buried in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery in Chamois, Missouri. Mary and Gerard moved to Washington, Missouri in 1944. She returned to Chamois in 1947 after her husband's fatal accident. Here she worked for Operman's Pants Factory for four years, for Calverts three years and then at the Linn Mfg. Co. for five years. In 1964 she and Joanne moved to Jefferson City where she was employed by the State Motor Vehicle Driver's License Department until her retirement in December 1973. Paul Francis Stockman Sr., 76, of Jefferson City, died Saturday, February 19, 2011, at St. Mary's Health Center.

He was born on November 6, 1934, in Jefferson City, the son of the late Elmer Matthew and Rose B. Mertens Stockman. Paul was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage on December 3, 1957, in Ft. Carson, Colo., to Betty Jane Carneal, who resides at the home.

Paul was the owner and operator of Paul Stockman Cabinet Shop for over 50 years where he worked side-by-side with his sons. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, VFW, and Eagles. Paul enjoyed restoring old cars, fishing, and gardening. His greatest joy was his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include: seven children, Tim Stockman (Donna Foster), Jefferson City, Lisa (Jim) Lage, Mary's Home, Nora Welschmeyer, Jefferson City, Earl Stockman, Taos, Brenda (Kevin) Bullock, Vienna, Greg Stockman, Jefferson City, Paul "Tate" (Lisa) Stockman Jr., Jefferson City; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four siblings, Rosemary Long, Jefferson City, Donna (Fred) Straub, Jefferson City, Ann (Ron) Schenk, Arizona, Carol (Dennis) Jacknewitz, Illinois. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lydia Cremer; and four brothers, Harold, Elmer, Earl, and Leonard Stockman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Alex Ekka officiating. He died cancer on 25 August 2010 in Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri. Roderick Theodore Veit, 80, of Jefferson City, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born October 11, 1929, in Taos, Missouri to Clarence Albert and Anna Frances (Mertens) Veit. Mr. Veit was united in marriage to Rose Elizabeth Wieberg on June 1, 1949, in Vienna, Missouri who preceded him in death on September 21, 1996.

He is survived by seven children: Michael (Linda) Veit, Carol (James) Duenow, Marilyn Veit, Dennis (Janet) Veit, all of Jefferson City; David (Nikki) Veit, of White Lake, Mich.; Kenneth (Becky) Veit, of Osage Bend; Mark (Tawnya) Veit, of Jefferson City; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence (Dorothy) Veit, of Jefferson City; Albert (Marlene) Veit, of St. Charles; Stan (Charlotte) Veit, of Osage Bend; two sisters, Mary Ann (Tom) Schmidt, of Florissant; Catherine Mulhall, of Wardsville; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Veit, of Florissant. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Anna (Mertens) Veit; and one brother, Quentin Veit, of Florissant.

Mr. Veit graduated from St. Peters School in Jefferson City, Mo. in 1947. During his lifetime, Roderick was employed by St. Mary's Hospital, the United States Post Office and the Division of Employment Security from which he retired in 1992 after over 40 years of service. Mr. Veit was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and an active member of the Holy Name Society. He volunteered at the Samaritan Center and he often volunteered at several other community activities which included Knights of Columbus barbecues, State Cross Country Meets and Cross Country Spaghetti Dinners. Rod lived a very active lifestyle. He pitched and played for the Osage Bend baseball team. He also played on local softball teams, Employment Security bowling team, coached baseball for his sons, and supported his grandchildren in their sporting events throughout the years. Rod enjoyed card playing, pitching horseshoes, hiking, running, walking, and traveling. Being a man of many talents, Rod designed and built a cabin on the Osage River, assisted and directed the building and remodeling of his families' homes. He upholstered and built furniture, worked on the family farm and was a creative mason and carpenter. Rod's greatest joy was spending time working on projects with his brothers and sisters, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and providing them an opportunity to know and appreciate the great outdoors as he did by maintaining and continuing to care for the family farm and cabin along the Osage River. Rod's life was centered and grounded in his faith. He attended and served at daily Mass. His devotion to Mary and the rosary was his support in all things.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2010, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. David D. Cox officiating. Entombment will be in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum. She died cancer on 3 August 2011 in Adams Street Place. She was buried on 6 August 2011 in St. Margaret Cemetery in Cole County, Missouri. Catherine Josephine Veit Mulhall, age 75 years, of Wardsville, Mo. passed away from cancer on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Adams Street Place, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church.

She was born on March 7, 1936 in Osage Bend, Mo., a daughter of the late Clarence Albert and Anna Frances Mertens Veit. Catherine was married on December 31, 1970 in St. Charles, Mo., to Lawrence Edward Mulhall. She was married to Larry for 32 years until his death on December 10, 2003.

Catherine graduated in 1954 from St. Peter's Catholic High School. She received a teaching certificate and taught school at Osage Bend; St. Thomas; and Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Jefferson City. After teaching, she worked eighteen years for the Department of Health and Welfare and the Department of Revenue. Her husband's cable installation business took her to live in California, Ohio, Delaware, Florida and Louisiana. She was a custodian for Blair Oaks School in Wardsville for ten years, where students remember her for her homemade cookies. After coming back home to Osage Bend she became a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church. She stayed and helped her aging parents and later, she cared for her husband until he passed away from an extended illness.

Some of her favorite things to do were sewing for family, quilt making with her sister, gardening, twenty years of Holy Hours in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville, playing slot machines, scratch-off tickets and spending time visiting with her family and friends.

Her favorite pastime was checking on her extended family to see how they were doing. After several hurricanes in Louisiana, possessions became less important to her, she lived simply and was always donating to various charities.

All of her family and friends will miss her warm caring nature and her witty sense of humor.

She was a cherished sister and sister-in-law of Clarence (Dorothy) Veit Jr. of Jefferson City, Mo.; Mary Ann (Tom) Schmidt of Florissant, Mo.; Albert (Marlene) Veit of St. Charles, Mo.; Stan (Charlotte) Veit of Osage Bend, Mo.; beloved aunt of thirty nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; and many dear cousins.

She was preceded in death by Quentin (survived by his wife Joyce) Veit of Florissant, Mo. and Rod (Rose) Veit of Jefferson City, Mo.

Visitation will be held at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Osage Bend from 10:00 until 11:00 am Saturday, August 6, 2011.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 am Saturday at St. Margaret Catholic Church with the Reverend David Viet officiating. Interment will be at St. Margaret Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Roger Theodore Mertens, 73, of Jefferson City, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born on April 3, 1932 in Osage Bend, MO, the son of Emil Henry and Catherine Elizabeth Siebeneck Mertens.

He was married on Oct. 4, 1952 in Jefferson City to Catherine Rose Stockman who survives at the home.

A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mr. Mertens founded Roger Mertens Distributing in 1961; Roger Mertens Boat Sales in 1964; and Cold Cube Ice Company in 1975 which he owned until it was sold in 1984.

He was an active member of the Cathedral of Saint Joseph where he served on various church committees including the Men's Association. He was a member of American Legion Post 5; Westside Business Association; Fraternal Order of Eagles; and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a past president of Missouri Petroleum Marketer's Association; past officer of United Sportsmen's Association; held a private pilot's license; and was an active supporter of 4H clubs and the Jefferson City community.

Other survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn K. and Darrell Garmer, St. Louis; and Sharon A. and Mark Alexander, Marshfield, MO; five sons and their wives, Larry D. Mertens and his fiancée, Laurie Pleus; Gerald W. and Kerri Mertens; Greg A. and Laura Mertens; John P. and Michelle Mertens; and Glenn J. Mertens, all of Jefferson City; seven grandchildren, Justin Raithel, Jayme Mertens, Mackenzie Mertens, Lexi Mertens, Luke Mertens, Tanner Mertens, and Megan Mertens; one step-grandson, Cheston Alexander; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ray Jenkins, Mission, TX; and one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Renilda Mertens, Taos, MO.

He was preceded in death by two infant sisters, Sharon Mertens and Elizabeth Mertens.
